Gibraltar is an impressive sight as you approach it by road, an enormous mountain rising from the sea in complete contrast to the Spanish mainland around it. Gibraltar is a British colony having been given in perpetuity by Spain in the 1600’s. Politically it is a hot potato with Spain eager to get it back. However, a recent referendum voted 99.9% in favour of remaining British and so no British Government would be unable to return it to Spanish rule. It is hypocrisy anyway when Spain has territory it occupies in Morocco (Cueta) that it should give back first! Gibraltar is famous for the Barbary Apes, macaque monkeys that scrounge food from the tourists despite notices that forbid it. Legend would have it that the British will own the rock as long as the apes remain. Gibraltar has a very British feel about it. Walking down the main street is a little like walking down Tottenham Court Road in London with its many electronic shops all vying for trade. A cable car will take you to the top of the rock where you will find some fabulous views (even the Moroccan coast on a clear day), and St Michael’s Cave where concerts are held.
